Spring Cleaning and Organization Inspirations

Flowers are starting to bloom, the days are getting longer, and that can only mean one thing, spring is in the air. When it comes to spring, it is the perfect time to tidy up around your home, both inside and out. We are going to review some spring cleaning and organization ideas to hopefully help inspire you for the season ahead.

How did Spring Cleaning Come to be?

Before we can inspire you with some spring cleaning and organization ideas, we wanted to touch on how spring cleaning even became a thing. While we all know about this tradition, how did it start and why has spring become the time that people decide to clean up and around their homes?

During the 1800s, according to the Washington Post, the biggest annual housecleaning took place in the spring because the winter left homes coated with “a layer of soot and grime in every room.” Lamps of the time were lit with whale oil or kerosene, which had to be heated with coal or wood, so you can just imagine that mess. Proper cleaning required opening windows to let the soot out, which, of course, could only be done during warmer weather.

While we may not full-on hibernate like bears and other animals; we still become more sluggish and sleepier in the winter months due to fewer hours of sunlight. As HowStuffWorks explains, less hours of daylight trigger the release of melatonin in our brains, the hormone that causes sleepiness. This causes us to literally not have the energy to deep clean during colder months. When the days start getting longer, we’re energized by more sunlight and that sunlight streaming through the windows makes the dust, and other things laying around, highly visible.

What are Some Spring Cleaning and Organization Ideas?

As you start to put your spring cleaning list together, make sure you think about all areas of your home, even the forgotten places like your outdoor shed, basement, and attic. Spring is a great time to get everything around your household organized, including the areas that many people may not see or use frequently.

Below we review some spring cleaning and organization tips to help you get started.

  • Start with the kitchen. The kitchen, in many households, is one of the most used spaces of your Southern California home. By adding it to the top of your spring cleaning list, you will likely understand the benefits of having it cleaned and organized and it can inspire you to move to other areas of the home. Try to move things off your counters and keep your countertops as empty and free of clutter as possible. Check out some of our other kitchen organization tips as you start tackling the space.
  • Take on your closets. Let’s face it, as we are hurrying around our homes, our closets can turn into the dumping ground for things we don’t have a home for or don’t have time to put away. It is easy to throw something behind a door and close it so it is out of sight and out of mind. Spring is a great time to get organized again and make your closets, spaces in your home, that you can be proud of.
  • Clean up your office space. If you have an office in your home, you may find it overwhelmed with paperwork and other items that have accumulated throughout the year. It’s time to get organized. File your paperwork away, create spaces for supplies, etc. You never know what you may find hidden under all the things that are sitting on your desk.
  • Tackle the toys. During the winter, our children, like most of us, are inside for more of the time, and that can cause toys to build up and end up in every corner of your home. Spring is the perfect time for new toy storage ideas or for you and your family to get back on track with your previous toy organization habits.
  • When in doubt, rollout. There are endless possibilities when it comes to storage solutions for your Southern California home. When it comes to selecting a storage option that is convenient and best suited for you and your family, it is important to remember that your cabinet shelves were not designed with you in mind. Rollout shelving could be just the solution you were looking for to transform your home. Rollouts offer a solution for those hard to reach, messy and unused areas, forgotten items, or other things way in the back of the shelf.
